Bird & Bird type #6
The Measured Technician
professional & analytical & client focused
Zain has always had a creative streak and wanted to be an author, spy, cricketer and even magician at various times. “However, a career in law always stood out for me and I was naturally attracted to Bird & Bird with its globally renowned intellectual property, sport and media practices.”
Unlike many other city firms, Bird & Bird has a relatively small trainee intake which coupled with the firm’s confidence in its recruits provides an opportunity to obtain a significant degree of responsibility. In the first month of my first seat, I undertook an investigative mission on a trade mark litigation case, which resulted in me collecting evidence of infringement. I ended up drafting two witness statements and during the trial was involved in the cross-examination of a witness that I had incriminated. I was really made to feel like a valuable part of the team, which sums up the inclusive nature of the firm.
The firm also offers some great opportunities to trainees from various client secondments to international placements. During my seat in Sport I was able to go on secondment to a sports governing body, which was an invaluable experience. It allowed me to gain a better understanding of the client’s business needs, which go beyond the law. It was challenging at first but incredibly rewarding overall, much like the training contract as a whole!
