This week is National Loneliness week. The aim is This week is National Loneliness week. The aim is to raise awareness of loneliness and encourage people to speak about it openly. This year, the campaign is called ‘One Less Lonely Voice’, with the ‘one’ taken out of ‘loneliness’ to signify one less lonely voice.
The Graduate Team at Bird & Bird understand that remote working could be making people feel lonely. Our trainees are encouraged to reach out to us if they want to talk and they have also been having regular catch ups with each other and partaking in quizzes on Zoom!

This week is UK Mental Health Awareness Week. In t This week is UK Mental Health Awareness Week. In these unprecedented times it’s particularly important to pay attention to our mental wellbeing and how we are coping with the changes to all our lives.
The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is ‘kindness’. Studies have shown that positive effects of kindness include building mental well-being, self-compassion and strong societies.
Six tips for mental wellbeing 1) Sleep. Sleep is often not prioritised when we are busy, yet it is the foundation for optimum mental and physical health and energy.
2) Mind-set. Our mind-set is potentially the most important of these six areas yet it is often the one given the least attention. Our thought patterns and emotions both at work and outside of work play a key role in our internal and external environment and balance by supporting our ability to manage stress, achieve our goals and remain consistent with the habits that we know support our overall health.
3) Daily switch-off time. The modern lifestyle and high work demands make daily switch-off time from work, deep relaxation and meditation an essential part of managing stress and maintaining work-life balance.
4) Nutrition. Quality food = fuel and nutrients for our health and energy. What, when and how much we eat and drink can either lead us towards optimum health and energy or can take us in the other direction causing many health-related challenges.
5) Exercise. The modern lifestyle has become extremely sedentary. Our bodies were meant to move, so incorporating movement into our lives each day plays a key role in our overall health and energy.
6) Relationships. Global research around the blue zones (places around the world where people live to over a hundred) shows that one of the key factors in overall health, happiness and longevity is the quality of the relationships in our lives – so show kindness and call a friend or loved one.

What should I being doing?: Tips on how to use thi What should I being doing?: Tips on how to use this time if you’re looking to apply for a vacation scheme or training contract in the future Now that we’re all staying at home, this could mean a lot more free time.
If you’re thinking of applying for a vacation scheme or training contract in the future then you could use this time to get ahead! Here’s our top tips on how to use free time to prepare: 1) Research, research, research! Spend some time on the firm’s website and social media and become an expert on them. Have a look through all the practice and sector areas and think about the reasons you really want to work there. Make sure to read up on any recent cases the firm has worked on! 2) Improve your commercial awareness by keeping up to date with current affairs and news (if you can find any that isn’t about coronavirus!) or finding a podcast aimed at building on your business knowledge or commerciality. There are lots of articles on LinkedIn to help with this! 3) Look back over your work experience to date and think about how the skills you learnt are transferrable to the role of a lawyer, even if the role wasn’t in the legal industry. 4)Practice psychometric tests and video interviews. Most firms now use both of these in their assessment processes. There are lots of places online you can practice psychometric tests for free and Shortlister has a range of free practice law graduate video interviews. You can access them at shortlist.me 5) Get networking – virtually of course! If you haven’t already, create a LinkedIn account and connect with anyone you think could help you such as current trainees or the firm’s graduate recruitment team. Maintain your connections via messages and try to set up a call – if the person is willing – to discuss applications. #lawgraduate #lawcareer #stemstudents #stemcareers #stemandlaw #futurecareer #university #londongraduates
