Bird & Bird type #2
The Inquisitive Thinker
client orientated & intelligent & strong people skills
It was Bird & Bird’s impressive credentials and reputation in the fields of technology, media and sport that drew Sam Rayner to the firm. “As a keen sportsman with a passion for cutting-edge gadgets and technology, our values clearly aligned,” says Sam. “Bird & Bird stood out as a firm that would embrace these interests and encourage me to combine them with my passion for law.”
From day one of my summer vacation scheme, I felt fully integrated within the firm and was able to meet with senior members of staff across all practice areas and sector groups – even the CEO, David Kerr. My department made a special effort to get me involved in matters they felt, based on my CV, would particularly interest me. The variety of social events on offer in the evenings meant it was easy to get to know the other students – and since Bird & Bird recruits heavily from the scheme, many of them have now become my colleagues.
Since starting my training contract, I have been trusted with a great deal of responsibility, enjoyed lots of direct client contact and have assisted on matters that have been front page news. The atmosphere is welcoming, progressive and my opinions are clearly valued by my supervisors. Genuine interest, professionalism and curiosity are all noted and rewarded.
The firm lays on regular sporting, social and CSR events. Many of us went to the annual inter-office football tournament, this year held in Budapest. It was great fun and a good opportunity to meet our international colleagues (even if we did lose on penalties in the final).
As we move into our new building at 12 New Fetter Lane, the next few years will be an incredibly exciting time to be a trainee at Bird & Bird. If you want the opportunity to work on cutting-edge matters, surrounded by great people who also happen to be internationally renowned experts – this is the place to apply. I have learnt so much during my short time at the firm and know, even at this early stage, that I will be fully supported in whichever direction I choose to take.
